Motorola Spotlight Player updated, preps Moto X for ‘Duet’
One of the cooler features of theMotorola Moto X is Motorola’s Spotlight Stories, which are short animated films designed specifically for mobile consumption. Motorola (well, technically now they’re Google ATAP) puts software engineers together with award winning directors and animators to bring fully immersive and interactive short stories to their Moto X line. TheMotorola Spotlight Player app has been updated to bring the team’s latest creation to Moto X users, named Duet. The latest story features hand-drawn animations from Disney animation legend Glen Keane.
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen Duet though. In fact, it’s been quite a while since we got our first look at Duet back at Google IO in June. During the Google ATAP presentation, Regina Dugan noted that part of the reason behind Duet was not only that Glen wanted to draw again, but they were hoping to breathe life into an art form that is almost lost. Glen Keane retired in March 2012 after being at Disney for 38 years.
Transforming Glen’s art form into a beautiful finished product was no easy task for the team. Glen’s animations are drawn on paper with a graphite pencil and in 2D, where he is able to do something that no mathematical encoding or rendering engine can accomplish. Glen’s animations truly come to life as they age and grow in a seamless fashion. To achieve this task, Glen had to draw with mobile devices in mind at 60 frames per second, which is much higher than the 24 frames per second he was used to. If any pixelation occurs, the true message and art form are lost. The end result would produce 10,055 separate drawings taking up 13.5GB of storage space. Motorola was able to compress that down to just 150MB for our viewing pleasure.

Google gets fined for showing cleavage in Street View
No, you are not reading The Onion. This is a real story.
Google has been fined by a Canadian court for using a photo in Street View that contained a woman and her cleavage. The woman in the photo claimed that she was so embarrassed it caused her emotional damage and a bout of depression. This all started in 2009, by the way, but today the case has finally been settled.
What kind of ridiculous amount of money did Google have to pay to make this woman feel better? A mere $2,000. The woman was hoping for more, but the judge did not buy her story about emotional damage and depression. If you don’t want to be embarrassed by cleavage maybe you shouldn’t sit on your front porch in the middle of the day in a low cut shirt.
Movies & TV on your Roku
With the Nexus Player and Chromecast, we always thought of the Roku as a competing product, one that Google would like to stomp into the ground. That’s not entirely true. Today, Google announced that they’re bringing Google Play Movies & TV to the tiny streaming set top box (Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the United States only).
Just hop on over to Roku’s Channel Store and you should find it listed. The coolest part? Google Play Movies & TV also supports the Android app’s new Info Cards. Press pause and watch as the actor’s name that appears on screen is revealed on your Android device. Pretty damn cool. Also, Google is giving away a free copy of X-Men the movie for anyone who signs in using their Roku.

Moto X 2014 with football leather back coming just in time for NFL Thanksgiving
Besides running a slightly modified version of stock Android, arguably one of the better features of the Moto X is customization. Customers can visit Motorola’s MotoMaker site and choose from a variety of colorful back covers or opt for something a bit more unique and go with a wood or leather option – I chose cognac leather for mine. Well football fans, it looks like Motorola will be bringing you an additional customization choice in the near future.
Coming the third week of November, football fans will be able to purchase a Moto X with a leather back that looks and feels like a traditional football. There’s no word on carrier exclusivity, however our tipster only provided us with information for Verizon’s variant as shown below. There’s also no word on pricing, but if it’s anything like the current leather options, you should expect to fork over an additional $25 your footballified Moto X.
While this special leather back might allow for a better grip on your Moto X, I wouldn’t recommend tossing your phone around with your friends and family this Thanksgiving. Well, that’s it for now. If we get any more information, we’ll update this post accordingly. Source : frnds frm phandroid
Nexus 9 Unboxing and Gallery
As you now know, we have a Nexus 6 in house, which has already been unboxed. But for the tablet fans in the building who aren’t interested in Google’s new whale, we thought you would be interested in seeing one of the other new Nexus devices of the year, the Nexus 9. This is the return of a partnership between HTC and Google, something we haven’t seen since the original Nexus One. Many of us have been waiting years for this to happen.
As a recap, the Nexus 9 is currently up for pre-order from a number of retailers with an expected ship date of November 3. There are 16GB, 32GB, and 32GB LTE models that run $399, $479, and $599, respectively. Google and HTC have made Black, White, and Tan models, though the Tan model has yet to become available.
In hand, the Nexus 9 looks and feels a lot like last year’s Nexus 7 (2013) with its matte black, soft touch finish, but differs because of its square-ish 4:3 aspect ratio. HTC has also tossed in BoomSound front speakers, an 8MP rear camera, NVIDIA Tegra K1 64-bit processor, 2GB RAM, and an 8.9-inch IPS LCD display. And yes, it also runs Android 5.0 “Lollipop.”
We will have more details and thoughts in the very near future, since November 3 is this coming Monday.

Motorola DROID Turbo battery life test: nowhere near 2-days, but still pretty great
We’re getting ready to charge up our newly purchased Motorola DROID Turbofor the day, but before we do, we wanted to share some personal battery life stats with you from our first day with the device. By now we’ve all heard Motorola and Verizon’s claims of 2-day battery life on the Turbo, one of the reasons we rushed out to buy the phone on day 1. So, just how true are those claims? Well, as to be expected, they’re a bit overly optimistic. In our first day’s use, we didn’t get anywhere near the 2-day battery life as advertised but what wedid get wasn’t all that bad either.
After about 21 hours, our battery life was down to around 17% and still kicking. We know. On the surface, that doesn’t sound too great considering the DROID Turbo is outfitted with a substantially large 3,900mAh battery but there are multiple factors to consider, one of which is our screen on time: a little over 5 hours.
Now, we’re not big phablet users but coming from a reasonably sized smartphone that is absolutely unheard of in our experience. Typically we only see around 2 hours of screen on time (full brightness) from most of our Android devices in the same amount of time with light or normal usage.
With the DROID Turbo, we were doing quite a lot with it (installing apps, playing video games, streaming YouTube, taking pictures, browsing Imgur). It’s not extremely heavy usage, but definitely more than we’d do on any other device where battery life is always something you keep in the back of your mind (“Should I watch this YouTube video? Nah, better wait until I plug in just in case“).
Another factor to consider is we had the brightness on nearly full blast the entire time we were using the DROID Turbo. And while battery life will never, ever, be the same for any 2 people (we know, you get 2 days of battery life on your old MyTouch 4G with blah, blah screen on time — whoop-dee-doo), we wanted to give you a rough ballpark figure of what we experienced from the Motorola DROID Turbo on the first day. We know battery life is a major deciding factor for many when it comes to their next smartphone purchases.
Our guess for why battery life wasn’t all that groundbreaking? The phone’s overkill 1440p display. We can only wonder how things would have looked on the Moto X (2nd Gen) with the same sized battery. Keep in mind we still have our full review coming soon, in which we’ll be sure to take into accountmultiple charging cycles and will report back our findings. Stay tuned!
Watch this: Samsung Galaxy S5 running leaked Android 5.0 Lollipop build
When Google showed off Android 5.0 Lollipop’s new Material Design aesthetic during this year’s Google I/O, the first thing we thought about was how this would translate to the custom skins offered by OEMs like HTC and Samsung. Just before we kick off the weekend, the boys at SamMobile are quenching a little bit of this curiosity with an early look at Android 5.0 Lollipop running on the Samsung Galaxy S5.
This is actually the second time they’re showing off Samsung’s version of Lollipop, although this one is much more recent build. Although it’s still an early version of the software Samsung will eventually roll out to their Galaxy line, it clues us in on exactly what the OEM has in mind for their version of Google’s Material Design UI and really, it’s not half bad.
The current version of the TouchWiz running on the Galaxy S5 we found was actually much easier on the eyes and in some respects, not too far — at least in color scheme — to what Google introduced in Lollipop. The newly leaked version of Lollipopped TouchWiz shows a similar TouchWiz interface, only with small design tweaks to the Settings, Calculator, Dialer and more. Google’s Copresence leaked, send content directly between nearby Android and iOS devices
There have been hints that Google was working on a new service for transferring data between users in relation to their the individuals’ location. Dubbed “Copresence,” footprints of the new service have now been discovered hidden inside the latest Google Play Services update.
According to the data, it could allow for both Android and iOS devices to communicate with each other, sending miscellaneous files, pictures or other media via Bluetooth or even over WiFi — presumably WiFi direct given the 2 devices pictured below are at a bus stop.
A treasure trove of files were not only discovered inside the new Google Play Services apk (complete with introduction images), but also APIs in the Chrome Dev channel. Apparently it may not even require a Google account to login, again, a good indication that it will be cross platform. Of course, this is all opt-in (as revealed by the image file names).
Typically, when 2 people want to send each other files this is usually done by uploading files to a cloud service like Google Drive — where they’re then saved, then having the other person download said media. In an age of privacy, not everyone wants to upload media to the cloud. Using Copresence, users on iOS or Android can send files directly to one another, possibly even communicating in other ways like voice messages. Totally private and secure.
No word on when we can expect Copresence to launch, although with although the XML files and Chrome APIs suggest it could be coming really soon.

Andy no more with google !! WHAT??
Android founder Andy Rubin is no longer working at Google!!

After Andy Rubin helped build the best mobile operating system the world has ever seen, it took many by surprise when he decided to leave Android last year to pursue other ventures, building robots within Google’s secretive X labs. Today, The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the Android co-founder is now leaving Google entirely, creating an “incubator” for new hardware-based startups.
It’s not really directly Android-related per se, but given Andy Rubin is the Godfather of Android, we’re sure this comes as a major blow to Google and the people who’ve worked closely with him for so many years. Google CEO Larry Page had this to say on Rubin’s departure:
“I want to wish Andy all the best with what’s next. With Android he created something truly remarkable—with a billion plus happy users. Thank you.”
According to Jessica Lessin of The Information, Rubin was looking for more freedom from his robotics unit, similar to the independent anti-aging company, Calico. Best of luck to him

[Lollipop Feature Spotlight] Long-Press Notifications For A Quick Link To Adjust That App's Notification Settings
There's nothing more annoying than an otherwise benign app that pesters you with notifications. Android has thankfully given end users the ability to completely disable notifications from pestering apps, but for developers who include more fine-grain controls in the app itself, Android 5.0 has some new options. French Android developer Cyril Mottier highlighted a new option in a detailed Google+ post: the ability to embed a link directly to an app's notifications settings within the notification itself.
For the sake of specificity, this new API hook allows developers to add a quick link to the notifications settings page of the app itself, not the relevant page in the Android settings menu. Users can expose this notification settings icon by long-pressing the notification of supported apps, where it will appear alongside a quick link to the app info page. This isn't helping, is it? Check out the GIF below to see what I mean.
This option isn't visible in apps by default, but adding the functionality is pretty easy for developers - if an app already has notification options that face the user, the developer only needs to add a few lines of code. Check out Mr. Mottier's post for a concise explanation, or this Android Developers page for a more technical one. Verizon's Motorola Droid Turbo leaks its full retail form
We've already seen much of what's to come in the Verizon Motorola Droid Turbo thanks to some marketing leaks (you can see the full Droid Turbo specs as we currently know them), but this weekend we're getting one of our best looks at the upcoming phone in proper physical form thanks to Motofirmware — and in its full retail duds at that.
Along with a great look at the phone itself, we get confirmation that it'll ship with the Motorola Turbo Charger, which quickly gets a dead phone to a partial charge
LG G Pad 7.0 LTE, LG G3 now available at US Cellular
U.S. Cellular has announced availability for the LG G Pad7.0 LTE. You’ll be able to get the data-connected tablet for $99 on a new two-year contract, and should be able to find it both in-store and online. The 7-inch tablet won’t break the charts in terms of performance, but with a 1.2GHz quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 1280 x 800 resolution, a 5 megapixel camera, 16GB of storage and more it should be worth its low price tag.
The LG G3 is also roaring into US Cellular’s stores today. Many of you are already quite familiar with this device (especially if you’ve read our LG G3 review), but if not here’s a quick refresher on its specs:
- 5.5-inch 2560 x 1440 display
- 3GB of RAM
- 2.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon 805 chipset
- 13 megapixel camera
- 16GB or 32GB of internal storage
You can grab that one for $99 on a two-year contract as well, though the LG G3 is eligible for a $0 down payment to walk away with the device (so long as you agree to pay it off in equal installments over the course of a couple of years). Be sure to check both of them out over at US Cellular’s website or by stopping by your local retail location.

The Nexus 6 will have tap-to-wake so you wont have to stretch for the power button
Earlier this week we watched as a few major news outlets got some quick hands-on time with both the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9. Because Google didn’t preemptively issue any review units prior to their official announcement, new info on these devices has continually been trickling in. A few days ago, we saw a screenshot taken from a leaked Android 5.0 Lollipop ROM and a setting called Ambient display which allows the Nexus 6 display to wake up whenever the phone was picked up, or when notifications arrive.
This option — while not present in the Android 5.0 Developer Preview — is just a regular ‘ol Lollipop software feature and not exclusive to the Nexus 6, as detailed by Google’s official Android Lollipop page. What was interesting was the under the feature section of the page, it not only mentions the ambient display mode, but tap-to-wake as well.
For those unaware, tap-to-wake is a feature found in many flagship Android devices and allows the user to double tap the display to wake it up instead of using the physical power button. While it may not sound like it, for larger devices it’s incredibly useful and will forever change the way you interact with your smartphone (and yet another helpful feature the iPhone 6 doesn’t offer).
Although never mentioned in any official capacity (or the hands-ons we’ve seen online), it seems this feature is fully present on the Nexus 6, as brought to light Wired’s Mat Honan. In his hands on, Honan specifically calls out the feature, although some were still left wondering if it could have been a misprint (the Nexus 9 also has tap-to-wake). We reached out to the author where he was able to confirm that yes, this is, in fact, a feature found in the Nexus 6 and was most certainly not posted in error. Boom.
This should finally lay the issue to rest and for tap-to-wake lovers who were afraid of losing out on this functionality for the Nexus 6 — fear not. Still up in the air is which non-Nexus Android devices will support the feature once Lollipop begins rolling out over the next few months.

Material Design icons provided by Google
App developers will want to get their hands on the latest collection of icons Google just open-sourced. Below is a download link to a pack of 750 different icons for use in apps, the mobile web and, well, whatever else you can think of. Many of the icons are featured throughout Android 5.0 Lollipop as part of Google’s Material Design makeover so your apps won’t look out of place when trying to keep up with the Joneses.
Here’s a quick list of what to expect from this huge pack of icons:
- SVG versions of all icons in both 24px and 48px flavours
- SVG and CSS sprites of all icons
- 1x, 2x icons targeted at the Web (PNG)
- 1x, 2x, 3x icons targeted at iOS (PNG)
- Hi-dpi versions of all icons (hdpi, mdpi, xhdpi, xxhdpi, xxxhdpi) (PNG)

Looking quite good to me. Be sure to give it a download and use them in your apps and websites as soon as you can, because it won’t be long before the first Android 5.0 devices hit the market.
Check your email: first wave of Inbox by Gmail invites are going out now
Yesterday we told you guys about Inbox by Gmail, Google’s new app that looks to make sense out of electronic mail by infusing it with Google Now-like functionality. More of a productivity app, it wasn’t available to the public, requiring would-be users send an email in order to receive an invite.
Well, for anyone who sent one off, Google is now notifying early adopters that that they can now sign into the app using their standard Gmail account login. Pretty much everyone who we’ve talked to that requested an invite yesterday has received theirs, so it’s looking like a pretty big first batch of invites are being sent out.
Anyone who emailed Inbox yesterday not receive their invite yet?
The Nexus 5 is now back in stock on Google Play (all colors, 32GB only for now)
As we approach the 1-year anniversary of the Nexus 5 officially launching in the Play Store, a few days ago the phone — all colors, all storage configs — was suddenly no longer available for purchase on Google Play. This was puzzling, especially after we thought the phone would stick around as a much smaller, much cheaper unlocked option for those of us that couldn’t stomach the Nexus 6.
Some point this evening, the 32GB model — all colors — has once again become available for purchase in the Play Store, showing shipping times of about 1-2 days before leaving the warehouse. Although we’re not seeing the 16GB model, we’ve heard reports that others have seen it, so we’ll keep an eye out. In the meantime if you were thinking about pulling the trigger on a Nexus 5 (it’s still a damn good Android phone), now’s your chance.
