Yesterday Google unveiled their all new wearable OS, Android Wear, as well as a leaked picture of what a smart watch might look like running it. It’s certainly got the tech community buzzing as this is the first time we’ve seen anything official from Google in regards to a watch and initial impressions are positive. But how does Google’s latest venture into smart watches affect the competition?
Pebble
But will Pebble take advantage of Google’s latest offerings? If Google offers the same functionality, but offers a superior UI, the Pebble could be in some serious trouble from other competitors if they don’t utilize the same OS.
Where the Pebble might shine is with their price. A Pebble watch costs $150, thats a steal compared to the price of Samsungs Galaxy Gear. If Pebble fully utilizes Android Wear, expect them to be an out of the gate winner.
Galaxy Gear
Google’s big advantage is that their watch will work across platform with other manufacturers, whereas Samsung products only work with their own.
Conclusion
I expect this latest venture to be Google’s big push for getting wearable devices mainstream. So far there has been no company that has been successful in getting these types of devices popular. Google could accomplish this with competitive pricing and smart marketing.
